Posted in Uncategorized on March 20, 2013 by barprofs

Please look at our new and expanded website at barprofessors.com.

My students tell me that they have received an email from the Illinois Board of Bar Examiners asking for an updated email address and informing the students that the Illinois bar exam results will be coming out in two weeks.

Results will be starting to come out soon! Will Illinois be the first results out this bar exam cycle?

The February 2013 Bar Exam: The California Bar Exam

Posted in Uncategorized on March 11, 2013 by barprofs

I had a few students taking the California Bar Exam.  Their 6 California essays were, in no particular order, corporations, criminal law, remedies,  negligence, civil procedure,  and  professional responsibility.

How did you think you did on these essays?

The February 2013 Bar Exam: The UBE Exam

Posted in Uncategorized on March 8, 2013 by barprofs

I had a few students taking the UBE.  Their 6 MEE essays included property, contracts, constitutional law, evidence and commercial paper.  The property question concerned a landlord tenant issue; the contract issue was a contract with a boat strike and a request for assurances; the constitutional law question was a school pledge of allegiance issue; the evidence essay dealt with admissibility; the agency question dealt with authority of an agent and the commercial paper issue was a promissory note that was transferred to a few people and the holder in due course.

How did you think you did on these essays?

The February 2013 Bar Exam: The New Subjects on the Florida Bar Exam

Posted in Uncategorized on March 7, 2013 by barprofs

For the February 2013 bar exam, I had my students in Florida review the new subjects on the bar exam.  We went over secured transactions, commercial paper, dependency and juvenile delinquency.  Yet, none of those subjects were tested on the bar exam.  Why not?  The Florida Bar Examiners made a big production of changing the rules and  letting everyone know that the changes would be effective for the February 2013 bar exam.  I remember getting the drafts of the new changes, 4 or 5 years ago.  Are they waiting for the “larger” bar exam crowd in July to launch the new subjects or will that be a bust, too?  Will the new subject essays be a stand alone or will it be part of a cross over subject?

The February 2013 Bar Exam: The New York Bar Exam Essays

Posted in Uncategorized on March 6, 2013 by barprofs

My students tell me that the New York essays subjects were:  Contracts and Ethics,  Wills and Trusts, Torts, Criminal Law and Evidence; Corporations and Family Law.

My students tell me that the contracts and ethics questions concerned formation, SOFs, revocation and the requisite professional responsibility issue.  The corporations and family law question had issues of the director’s duty of loyalty, the business judgment rule, a separation agreement and modification of child support payments.  The criminal law and evidence issues concerned second degree murder, attempt, double jeopardy, dying declaration and the attorney client privilege.  The torts essay was negligence, indemnification and contribution and joint and several liability.  The wills and trusts question concerned issues of  right of election, incorporation and rule against perpetuity.

For those in New York, how did you do and what were the issues you saw?

The February 2013 Bar Exam: The Bar Exam is Over, Would You Have Done Anything Differently?

Posted in Uncategorized on March 4, 2013 by barprofs

The bar exam is over and the waiting begins.    Before you get your results, you may want to reflect on how you may have done your studying differently.   Law schools and bar exam companies never fully prepare you for the “experience” of taking a bar exam.  It is something you have never done before  and you go into the unknown, always hoping you did what you needed to do to pass the bar exam.  I had one student tell me that she didn’t “get it” until she sat at the bar exam and the proctor gave the signal to begin.

What would you tell a fellow student who is gearing up to take the July 2013 bar exam?  Would you tell that student to study harder or differently?  Would you tell your friends to start studying earlier?  I am also convinced that the way you studied for the bar exam will reflect the way you approach your job as a lawyer.  To be a good lawyer you must put your sweat, time and effort into your cases – this is what separates you from all the other lawyers out there.  Can you say that you put it all on the table when you sat for the bar exam?  Will you put in the same effort you did studying for the bar exam when you get your bar license?
